Graduate Student advisees
Emily Locke (MA/MPH)
Emily is currently pursuing a dual degree in biocultural medical anthropology and public health. She is also in the process of becoming a postpartum doula! Her thesis explores how the combined effects of multiple disasters impact perceptions of infant health and well-being in Alabama's gulf coast. Emily supports Dr. Horan's maternal and infant health research needs assessment and serves as the Graduate Student Secretariat for Partners for Alabama Families and Communities (PAFC), a trans-disciplinary perinatal health collaborative at UA. Rabeya Kahtun (PhD)
Rabeya has a bachelor's and master's degrees in anthropology and currently served as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Comilla University in her home country of Bangladesh. For most of her career, she has been a medical anthropologist, analyzing how cultural and environmental factors in Bangladesh impact reproductive health, gendered forms of care, and maternal and infant health in allopathic settings. As a doctoral student, she is interested in investigating the mode of birth and the shifting political economy in Bangladesh. Her recent research has focused on maternal and infant health in Bangladesh and she intend to continue these studies throughout her doctoral education. |

Olivia Radcliff (MA/MPH)
Olivia (Liv) is pursuing a dual masters degree and is working on multiple projects in both anthropology and public health at the University of Alabama. She is currently supporting Dr. Holly Horan's project on Measuring the Impact of Doula Care in Central Alabama. As a research assistant, she is working with volunteer doulas to create a digital data collection tool that can be used in routine practice. Alex Meyer
Alex is currently in her second year of her bachelors. She is majoring in biology with a minor in interdisciplinary studies in medicine. She is a research assistant working on data collection for Dr. Horan’s project that measures the impact of community doula care in Alabama. Mia is a second year undergraduate student working on her bachelors in chemistry and criminology with a minor in interdisciplinary studies in medicine. She hopes to be accepted into medical school. Matthew is a third year undergraduate student enrolled in UA Accelerated Master's Program. He is specializing in biocultural medical anthropology. Currently, he is supporting the Fireside Relaxation Studies with Dr. Chris Lynn and a study tracking emotions with Dr. Jason DeCaro. With Dr. Horan, he is part of the Partners for Alabama Families and Communities collaborative, in which he is helping the group identify the greatest maternal and infant health needs in West Alabama. Emmily is currently in her second year of pursuing an undergraduate degree in anthropology with a minor in interdisciplinary studies in medicine. She is also a Randalls Research Scholars. Grace Gleason
Grace received her bachelors in anthropology with a minor in psychology from UA in December of 2020. She is beginning her masters of public health at UA in fall 2021. She is working with Dr. Horan on her MIH research needs assessment. Jean Ryu
Jean is a third year undergraduate student pursuing a dual degree in psychology, anthropology, and biology. They hope to get to medical school and work in obstetrics and gynecology. Jean is working with Dr. Horan on her maternal and infant health research needs assessment, her perineal trauma prevention case study, and her hair cortisol analysis study. Lilly Slaughter
Lilly is a third year undergraduate student in biology with minors in Spanish and interdisciplinary studies in medicine. In addition, she will be pursuing a Master’s in Biology through UA’s AMP Program. She is working with Dr. Horan on her assessment of maternal and infant health in the state of Alabama.
